Everyone Has a Plan for the Fire Drill
Fire drills are famously calm. The alarm sounds, everyone files out through the designated exits, checks their watch, and agrees the building could be evacuated in four minutes. On paper, the organization is prepared.
Then researchers studied actual fires, and found something unsettling: in real smoke, people don't use the designated exits. Overwhelmingly, they push toward the door they originally came in through — the familiar one — even when it's farther away, even when it's the wrong direction, even when they walked past a marked exit to get there. Under genuine fear, the brain doesn't consult the plan. It reaches for the familiar, and the plan made in calm daylight simply isn't loaded into the machine that's now driving.
Every risk-tolerance questionnaire you will ever take is a fire drill. "How would you feel if your portfolio declined 30%? (a) I'd buy more (b) I'd hold (c) I'd sell." You, sitting in a calm building with coffee, select (a) — and you're not lying. Calm-you genuinely would buy more. The problem is that calm-you won't be attending the crash. A different person will be there: one watching a decade of savings evaporate in weeks, marinating in headlines about collapse, being asked by a frightened spouse what the plan is. That person pushes toward the familiar door — cash — and the questionnaire never met them.
